Hanging of the Greens Service - Sunday, December 1, 2024
Thank you to all who helped decorate the church on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
As we begin the Christian year, we also celebrate the holy season known as Advent. It is a time when we prepare ourselves for the coming of our Messiah. Advent means “coming”. We celebrate these days of Advent in expectation and preparation for Christ’s arrival.
Through the centuries, Christians have observed a time of waiting and expectation before celebrating the birth of the Savior at Christmas. The Advent season is a time for reflection and preparation, but its mood is joyful. Advent has been enriched by Christian tradition to reflect its distinctive Christian meaning. It proclaims the revelation of God’s love as expressed in Christ’s birth in a humble stable, his sacrificial death on the cross, and his victorious resurrection! It points to the hope of Christ’s coming again as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Advent makes innkeepers out of all of us, asking each of us to make room for the arrival of Christ the King. Let us, today, prepare Him room in our hearts, our lives and our homes!

We celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time with Caleb Keller, Kathryn Maphis, and Stella Seward who have completed First Communion instruction. Let us all remember that Jesus is truly present, in, with and under the bread and wine. For Lutherans, the elements don’t magically become Christ but are both – the presence of Christ and bread and wine. We give thanks for his abundant grace and forgiveness of sins. Welcome Caleb, Kathryn and Stella to the table!

SAINT JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH THE SPIRIT OF THE FLAME AWARD
The origins of our church begin in 1787, when the lifeblood of this small rural community was the iron-ore smelting furnace lit off in 1769. Vital to the community, 0the furnace produced goods for farms and homesteads of a growing valley. The furnace was so impactful, that even when closed in 1795, the Pastor referred to those gathering weekly for prayer as the “Old Furnace Church.” Today, it is known as Saint John’s Lutheran Church.
Like the furnace of yester years, Saint John’s Lutheran Church continues to meet the needs of those families who settle in this valley community. And, just as the flame was critical to that furnace, equally vital to our thriving Church is the power of the Holy Spirit, the “flame of service,” that burns in the heart of our members.
The first Saint John’s “Spirit of the Flame Award” is earned by Mr. Doug Williams.
While preferring to remain in the shadows, quietly serving in a myriad of roles for our congregation, Doug gets things done! He is vital to the Worship and Music Committee. He arrives early each Sunday to get the sanctuary prepared, coordinates all the worship volunteers, publishes and produces our weekly bulletins, changes the hymn board, makes sure our worship assistants have the readings for their assigned Sunday, is always willing to assist with special services, counts and records attendance and Holy Communion, and many times he closes up the church (….first in and last out….). Doug is Co-Chair of our Outreach and Stewardship Committees as well. And what outreach he oversees! Our church has a concentrated outreach each month. Doug ensures that each outreach has an assigned coordinator, that the information gets into the bulletin, that the donated goods get counted, photographed, and delivered to where needed. Often, he does the delivering of donations himself. Doug is the tireless chair of our Building and Property Team that sees to the endless requirements of an aging, historic building, has built a pavilion with adjacent service facility, and is pursuing the addition of a steeple. In addition, Doug has served at least six years on Council, some of that time as Congregational President. He serves as Sunday School Superintendent and Treasurer for the Cemetery. Doug is faithful in attending worship plus is a consistent presence at broader Saint John’s activities. He models strong stewardship, always generously giving of time, talents, and resources. Whenever there's a need or an event, Doug is there, providing strong leadership, and lending a hand (without being asked)!
This flame of service extends beyond Saint John’s Church. In the community, Doug volunteers at CCAP by delivering food, being our contact to CCAP and researching how our church can help a new food pantry distribution site. Doug does what he does not to reach a goal or to meet an end. Doug does what he does out of love, love for his Lord, love for his church family and love for his community. Indeed the “flame of service” burns brightly in Doug as he serves this congregation and our community.

The Wreath and Candles
Advent is a time of expectation, and this is symbolized, not only by the four week period of preparation, but also by the lighting of an Advent candle in an Advent wreath on each Sunday of the season. The flame of each new candle reminds us that something is happening, and something more is still to come.
The candles are arranged in a circle to remind us of the continuous power of God, which knows neither beginning nor end. There is also symbolism in the colors of the candles. Thethree blue candles symbolize the coming of Christ from the royal line of David. He is coming as the King of Kings as well as the Prince of Peace. The pink candle is to be lighted on the third Sunday of the Advent season. This candle represents joy. The large white candle in the center is known as the Christ candle and points to Jesus as the Christ, the Light of the world.
A progression is noted in the lighting of the candles of the Advent wreath each Sunday. Each candle symbolizes various aspects of our waiting experience. The culmination of the season comes as we light the Christ candle on Christmas Eve. We join in rejoicing that the promise from long ago has been fulfilled.

The Evergreens
The most striking and the most universal feature of Christmas is the use of evergreens in churches and homes. Among ancient Romans, evergreens were an emblem of peace, joy, and victory. The early Christians placed them in their windows to indicate that Christ had entered the home. Holly and ivy, along with pine, and fir are called evergreens because they never change color. They are ever – green, ever – alive, even in the midst of winter. They symbolize the unchanging nature of our God, and they remind us of the everlasting life that is ours through Christ Jesus.
Holly became widely used in church celebrations. Holly was considered as the burning bush, or a symbol of Mary whose being glows with the Holy Spirit. The red berries represented the blood drops from the cruel thorns in the crown of Jesus.
Our forefathers called the procuring of these evergreens, “Bringing home Christmas!”

The Tree
Today, the Christmas tree is the center of our festivities. Glittering with lights and ornaments, it is a part of the beauty and meaning of Christmas. Martin Luther was one of the first to use the Christmas tree as a decoration. One Christmas Eve, Martin Luther wandered outdoors and became enraptured with the beauty of the starry sky. Its brilliance and loveliness led him to reflect on the glory of the first Christmas Eve as seen in Bethlehem’s radiant skies. Wishing to share the enchantment he felt with his wife and children, he cut from the forest an evergreen, glistening with snow and took it home. He placed upon it candles to represent the glorious heavens he had seen. He told his children that the tree should remind them of the brightness and the hope of Christmas and its message of the Savior’s birth.
Traditionally, at St John’s, a cedar tree has been provided and decorated with lights and Chrismons. The Chrismons are a variety of symbols of our faith and carry the theme of love, hope, faith and peace. In 2007, we replaced the original 50 year old Chrismons with new ones. These were handstitched by many members of St. John’s who were provided with a few supplies and simple instructions. What we decorate with today are a stunning variety of symbols of our faith – each as different as snowflakes, each as individual as we are, and each a true labor of love. As we trim and light the tree, may we be reminded of the love of our church family and everlasting love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gifts
When the apostles brought the gospel to Rome, the locals learned of the wise men who had come to present gifts to the newborn king. From then on, the exchanging of gifts remains an imitation of the kings who shared gifts. These gifts foreshadow the life and death of Jesus. Gold was the ultimate gift fit for a king. Incense, or frankincense was burnt in worship of God and myrrh was used when burying the dead.
As we gather and prepare gifts of food and items for those in need, we do so knowing it is indeed more blessed to give than to receive.

The Poinsettias
Poinsettias are the flowers of Christmas, a many pointed star that has become a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem. Their beauty is alive in splendid color. They call us to celebrate the world about us and to share its beauty in the place where we worship. The star shape formation of the red leaves suggests the guiding star to Bethlehem. The crown of yellow flowers reminds us of Him who was born the infant king. The blood red leaves foreshadow the cruel cross that lay ahead for the King of Glory. And underneath, the carpet of green is the reflection of abundant life.

There were crafts and face painting and a bounce house for the children, a Soak-N-Wet (dunk tank alternative), a 50/50 drawing, music and food for everyone as well as baked goods and craft items for sale. The scholarship fund benefitted from the proceeds from the sale of food, baked goods and craft items. Thank you to all who donated baked goods or homemade items, helped with crafts or face painting, served food or sold crafts, and the musicians (who donated their time to us at no charge) as well as all who attended the event and those that gave their time to set up for the event and afterwards for clean-up.
