On Saturday, October 16, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., we are co-hosting a movie event at St Paul Lutheran Church in Strasburg, in their Fellowship Hall to both educate and get ready for the coming weeks.
Pastor Zach (St. Paul) and Pastor Sonya will co-lead this event. All ages are welcome! The movie for the day is Disney’s Coco which has as its setting the Mexican tradition which started in the 1800’s, The Day of the Dead, and an adventure that flows from it. It has as the centerpiece, both the song, “Remember Me,” and the image of the ofrenda, the altar that the family makes at the Day of the Dead celebration, to remember relatives who have passed on: a table filled with photos, foods, and items that remember the loved ones and the lives they lived on earth. (And though not part of our own Lutheran historical tradition, it parallels the traditions of All Saints Day (All Hallows Day), and the day before, All Hallows Eve or Halloween which just happens to be the same calendar days as the Day of the Dead, October 31, 2021 through November 2, 2021. Our Saturday will provide time to share in watching the movie, discovering how it connects with what we will be celebrating in the coming weeks, a craft time, some pre-wrapped snacks, and an opportunity to learn about faith in a new and exciting way with a mix of folks of different ages who are from different places!
